What Happens When You Stop Apologizing for Taking Up Space?

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about belonging. Not the kind of belonging that asks you to edit yourself down, but the kind that makes room for all of who you are. The more I grow, the more I understand that fitting in and belonging are not the same thing. One asks you to shrink. The other allows you to stand fully in your truth.

Not All Connection Feels Like Home

I recently realized something about myself that feels both beautiful and a little inconvenient: I can travel alone, I do travel alone, and I do it well.

I am not afraid of the world. I am resourceful, independent, and perfectly capable of creating joy for myself wherever I go. I can figure things out. I can sit alone at a restaurant, book a tour, navigate a new city, and make a full experience out of it. But just because I can do something does not mean it is what fills me most.

What fills me most is connection.

No Toda Conexión Te Llega Al Corazón

¿Volveré a casarme algún día? Tal vez no. Quién sabe.

6 Rings, 5 Marriages, and 5 Lessons of Growth and Self-Love, Part IV

As I close this series, I realize that what I am truly searching for now is not love in other people, but the love within myself. I want to deepen that self-love.

I am working toward a deeper relationship with myself.

This 56-year-old woman is still finding herself. Yes, can you believe it? I am still learning, still letting go… still becoming.

The lessons have been many, and they have been hard-earned, but I know there is still more ahead of me.

I am no longer searching for love. And to be honest, right now the thought of it makes me a little uncomfortable. Almost like… yuck, no thank you.

There is a part of me that worries I now look at every man with suspicion. And I don’t want to become completely closed off. I don’t want pain to make me hard.

I want to learn skepticism without losing softness. Discernment without bitterness. Wisdom without fear.

Will I ever marry again? Maybe not. Who knows. And for the first time in my life, I am at peace with that possibility.

Do I believe I could still have a fulfilling relationship one day? Maybe.

But for the first time in my life, I don’t need that possibility to feel whole.

That is the lesson.

Me hicieron bullying.

6 Rings, 5 Marriages, and 5 Lessons of Growth and Self-Love, Part III

Because I realized, once again, that this is what I tend to do in my own life: I do not focus on the negative first. I focus on the positive. I miss the red flags. Even when there is so much wrong, I look for what is still good. That has been part of my survival. That is how I have pushed through life.

My childhood was not easy, but I do not live there. I do not dwell in that pain. I choose instead to remember the ways it made me stronger.

I was bullied. Me llamaban la loca.

But that bullying made me more resilient. It allowed me to dream of a better world. It gave me a hunger to rise above all of that and helped shape the woman who one day became a lawyer and a respected entrepreneur.

That has always been my way. I look for the silver lining, even when life has given me every reason not to.

My second husband took my house, the house we bought with money I had borrowed from my mother and father and from student loans I was still paying when we divorced. The house he wanted, but did not have a penny to buy.

And when he took it, the conciliator assigned to our case said, “Zoila, look at him. He has nothing. He is miserable. You are beginning your career as a lawyer. Let him have the house. You will have that and more in the bright future ahead of you.”

So, I let it go. I let go of the anger I carried because I felt taken advantage of.

And God provided. I became successful, just like the conciliator had spoken into the universe.
